Soundsational Science Education Program
The Soundsational Science educational program highlights the "Wonder and Science of Sound and Music." By using a full symphony orchestra, we will explore how sound is made throughout the four orchestral instrument families: strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion. Demonstrating how the physical size, length and construction of each instrument effects the sound, we will introduce children grades 4-8 to the concepts of timbre, frequency, and intensity. A projected oscilloscope will provide a visual component for students to see the actual sound waves being produced in real time.
Prior to each school visit, teachers and students will receive an in depth study guide, including links to musical examples and classroom assignments that correspond to the Pennsylvania Education Curriculum. Children will be invited to construct and share their own homemade instruments. They will design and conduct experiments that relate to the science of sound. Our goal is to help students learn about Science and Music in a fun and creative way.
In addition to learning about the "Science of Sound", students will be introduced to incredible works of classical music by a professional symphony orchestra. Musical selections will music by Tchaikovsky, Verdi, Bach, Brahms and Strauss (along with many other great composers). Our programs, while educational in nature, are designed to entertain and engage young minds in the world of art music. Beyond enriching lives, we believe by mixing the arts and education children can learn more effectively.
The Pennsylvania Philharmonic reaches over 15,000 students a year. We hope by providing children with access to a high quality symphony orchestra, we can serve as a catalyst to spark their interest in classical music, encourage them to learn an instrument and engage with the arts throughout their lifetimes. The arts open the hearts and minds of our young people, and empower them to imagine their own potential.
